Development in North Africa
North Africa is the source of a number of political and economic experiments that merit attention. For example, Morocco and Tunisia get good marks from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund for their economic reform programs; Algeria has tried, and then retreated from, democratization, but still enjoys one of the freest presses in the Arab world. This volume includes a number of stimulating essays that look at the region and its development from a comparative political economy perspective. A welcome addition to the literature.

European crisis: African boat people
Over the past year excessive sovereign debt has endangered the European project. This coming year North Africa's boat people, present the greatest danger to European unities. the turmoil over the illegal migrants is a consequence of the Arab pro-democracy awakening on the far side of the Mediterranean. According to UNHCR more than 20,000 boat people have landed on the Italian island of Lampedusa. Almost all of them from Tunisia, and more than 800 arrived in Malta from Libya. Trying to resettle the people, what are the European's going to do when the ministers don't want to give them protection?
